How to choose the right carpet size for your living room?
The size of the rug depends mainly on the size of your living room. Here are our recommendations depending on whether you have a large or small living room:
For a small living room
Ideally, all four feet of the chairs and sofas should be on the carpet, or at least the two front ones. Consistency is very important: if the four legs of the sofa are on the carpet, the four legs of the armchairs or chairs should be too.
We recommend a rectangular or square carpet rather than an oval or round one to keep the consistency. Be careful as well on how to pick a rug colour, especially for a small room: the colour will play a big role in the effect of space.
For a living room with more space
It is advisable to choose a large rug so that it takes up as much space as possible, especially for placing sofas and armchairs on top of it. If you buy a small one, which is only under the coffee table, you will make the space look smaller and your furniture will look less imposing.
However, as we explained in the article about putting rugs in the living room (which will be translated soon enough!), this is an option if you have a small living room. The goal is not to cover the entire floor of the living room, but also to highlight it. If you have a nice one, such as a vinyl-covered floor, the rug will also help to enhance it.
How to choose the size of the kitchen carpet?
In the case of the kitchen or dining room, you must keep in mind that the carpet must cover the space under the table and chairs. It is not only a question of design: the movements of the people seated at the table must be comfortable.
For this reason, the carpet should not stop directly behind the legs of the chairs. Think big and allow an extra 50 to 70 centimeters behind them.
Another rule to follow is that the rug should fit the shape of the table. In other words, if the table is round, the carpet should be round. The same rule should be followed if the room is rectangular.
Finally, your rug does not need to be glued to the wall. Ideally, there should be at least a half-meter gap between the end of the carpet and the wall. Prefer to buy a wall-to-wall carpet for your living room or bedroom.
How to choose a carpet for a bedroom?
The bedroom is a less busy room than the living room or the kitchen, but it is synonymous with comfort. But that’s no reason to neglect it! Putting a rug in there is a great idea for bedroom decoration.
The size of the room will also determine which measurements will work best, as well as the trends you can apply to each:
In a small or medium size room
If your bedroom doesn’t allow for a full-size rug, one solution that works just as well is the bed rail. The bedside rug is always on trend, whether the bed is in the centre of the room or in the corner of 2 walls.
If you want to create a more creative atmosphere, you can put 2 or 3 different small rugs around the bed, making sure that their dimensions are the same, as we show you in the image above.
In a large room
A trendy current option is to place a rug under the bed. The idea is to choose a rug long enough to extend beyond the bed. In addition to the aesthetics, it is an option particularly appreciated for its comfort.
What size carpet under a king bed?
We generally recommend a 9-foot by 12-foot rug under a king bed. Or a 12-foot by 15-foot if you’ve got a larger room!
Be careful, if you choose a large rug for your bedroom, don’t forget to leave enough space to open closet doors and other furniture without any trouble.
And why not dare a custom-made carpet?
There are a multitude of carpets on the market, of all types and sizes, and as you can see, choosing the right one is not an easy task. In the end, the best way to buy the perfect size may be to opt for a custom-made rug.
