Buying Guide: How to Choose the Right Rug Size

Often, when someone is looking to buy a rug, they focus on choosing the right design and colour and think very little about what size their rug should be. This is a mistake! Even if you choose a really beautiful rug, it can upset the interior design of a room if your rug is the wrong size.

Here we’ll tell you everything you need to know to choose a carpet with just the right measurements. Different rooms have different needs, and the right rug for your bedroom and living room will not necessarily be the same size.

Nothing can replace the advice of a rug and carpet specialist. If you are looking for new flooring in Montreal, you can drop by our store to get expert advice in person.

Otherwise… Follow the guide!

Rug sizes: a complete guide

Before we look at how to choose the right rug size for your room, take a look at the available rug size options in the table below.

How to choose the right rug size for a living room

The right size of rug for your living room is equivalent to at least the width of the sofa. It’s even better if it sticks out 15 to 25 centimetres on each side.

The dimensions of your living room can also influence your choice. Here is what we recommend for larger and smaller living rooms:taille-tapis-salon

FOR A SMALL LIVING ROOM

All four feet, or at the very least the two front feet of the chairs and sofas, should fit directly on the rug. It’s important to be consistent: if the four legs of the sofa are on the carpet, the four legs of the armchairs or chairs should be too.

We recommend a rectangular or square carpet rather than an oval or round one for this type of layout.

FOR A LARGE LIVING ROOM

In a big living room, we recommend choosing a large rug that takes up as much space as possible. This will give you plenty of room to place sofas and armchairs on top of the rug. If you buy a small rug that only fits under the coffee table, it will make the space look smaller and your furniture less imposing.

As we explain in our article, installing carpet in the living room can also be a good option if you have a small living room. The goal is not to cover the entire floor of the living room, but to complement it. If you have nice vinyl flooring, your rug can help to enhance it.

For a kitchen or dining room, the carpet should completely cover the space under the table and chairs. It is a question of both design and comfort.

To achieve the right effect and still be able to move chairs easily, your rug should stick out 50 to 70 centimeters beyond the legs of the chairs.

Another rule to follow is that the rug should fit the shape of the table: if the table is round, the rug should be round. The same rule applies if the table is rectangular.

Finally, your rug does not need to be glued to the wall. Ideally, there should be at least a half-meter gap between the edge of the carpet and the wall. Otherwise, you may prefer to simply buy a wall-to-wall carpet for your living room or bedroom.

How to choose the right rug size for a bedroom

The bedroom is not as busy as the living room or the kitchen, but that’s no reason to neglect it! This room is synonymous with comfort, and a well-placed area rug can be a great addition to bedroom decoration.

The size of the room will also determine which measurements and styles will work best:

IN A SMALL OR MEDIUM SIZE BEDROOM

If your bedroom isn’t big enough for a full-size rug, one solution is installing a bedside rug. This style always works, whether your bed is in the centre of the room or in a corner.

If you want to have a bit of fun with your space, you can also place two or three different small rugs of the same size around the bed, as in the above image.

IN A LARGE BEDROOM

In a large bedroom, current trends involve placing a rug directly under the bed. The idea is to choose a rug that is long enough to extend beyond the bed, both for appearance and comfort.

If you choose a large rug for your bedroom, remember to leave enough space to open closet doors and drawers easily.

Choose a custom rug

There are a wide variety of rugs of all types and sizes on the market, and it can be a challenge to choose the right one. In the end, the best way to buy the perfect sized rug for your room may be to opt for one that is made-to-measure.
