A sanctuary of rest and well-being, the bedroom is now one of the most important rooms in the home, particularly when it comes to décor.
While decorating trends keep evolving, some ideas remain classic and timeless. The bedroom is no exception: photos in all kinds of styles abound on the web.
But in this wide range of artistic expressions and atmospheres, you are bound to find ideas for decorating your bedroom that you can make your own.
So let’s look at 9 tips for decorating your bedroom.
1. Keep your bedroom simple

Decluttering the space helps declutter the mind. Simple décor in your bedroom will highlight comfort and elegance with small touches.
To make it easier to move around, it is a good idea to leave at least one metre between the bed and the side walls or large furniture, and at least one metre between the bed and low furniture such as tables and dressers.
If you have to walk around the bed to get from the closet to the bathroom, think about how you could move the bed.
Furnish your bedroom with the essentials. A bed, one or two nightstands, a dresser and a good rug are indispensable. Rugs have become one of the must-haves of interior design in recent years, and there are many reasons to buy a rug. If you have the space, learn how to dress the room by choosing the right rug size and adding a dresser, for example.
The idea is not to give in to clutter. By trying too hard, you could end up with heavy décor that weighs on the mind more than anything else. After all, a bedroom is first and foremost for resting!
2. Choose your rug carefully

As an expert carpet store in Montréal, you didn’t really think we would leave rugs off our list, did you?
A rug will automatically add much more warmth to your bedroom. Not only does it protect your feet from the cold when you get out of bed in the morning, a winter rug in the home also reinforces a cozy atmosphere and defines the focal point of the room. If comfort is your top priority, you can also opt for wall-to-wall carpeting in your bedroom, so you never have to worry about the morning chill when you get up.
That is also why it is often recommended to place your rug under the bed, so that it extends beyond the sides and acts as a bedside rug.
Alternatively, two rugs, one on each side of the bed, will highlight it and add to the comfort of your bedroom. Positioning a rug in a bedroom is an art in itself, so think it through carefully. 3. Make the most of the headboard

The headboard is also a major element of bedroom décor. If your bed already has one, you won’t have much choice when it comes to customizing it.
Still, don’t hesitate to repaint your headboard if it is made of wood, or to decorate it with small pots and bouquets of dried flowers, or even string lights.
And why not make it yourself? If that sounds like too much work, hanging frames, canvases or a large macramé on the wall will do the job just as well.
4. Surround yourself with green plants

When it comes to bedroom décor, green plants are a lovely solution.
Depending on the size of your bedroom, you won’t need many, unless you want to build the atmosphere around your plants.
Their benefits? Green plants contribute to our good health: some act directly on stress, and all of them improve the humidity of air that our household appliances can dry out. They also absorb CO2 and help purify the air. What’s more, their beautiful colour is said to be synonymous with rest… Perfect for a bedroom!
Which plants are suited to a bedroom? Aloe vera, gardenia, spider plant, jasmine and ivy, to name just a few! Don’t forget to air out your bedroom every day to refresh the air and help them thrive.
5. Take care of the walls

In a bedroom, the walls are your number one playground. Be bold with wallpaper, be bold with mouldings. More and more people are making their own mouldings by gluing on strips of wood and painting them.
As for colours, instead of bold primary colours, choose soothing shades and a restful palette of monochromatic tones.
Remember colour theory: soft shades of blue, lavender or green are considered calm and serene.
Rich shades help create an atmosphere of comfort and intimacy. These can be warm browns, deep pomegranates or topazes.
Use toned-down versions of your favourite colours in the bedroom. This might mean choosing mauve instead of eggplant, or pumpkin instead of tangerine.
A tip: still use these colours in small touches or as accents, and let your walls catch the light with mostly light tones.
6. Don’t overlook the bedroom ceiling

The ceiling is like the fifth wall of a room. When you lie in bed, do you see a bland white surface? Then add a subtle pattern or a soft colour.
Paint the ceiling a slightly lighter shade of the wall colour. This will visually lower the ceiling and give the space a feeling of comfort and intimacy.
For a more luxurious touch, a silver-leaf ceiling, a canopy or a tent bed with a ceiling-hung drape can bring a renewed sense of sensuality and warmth, especially since you can choose the texture, design and colour of the ceiling. You can add beams, a medallion or a crystal chandelier to bring colour, pattern and texture to the ceiling.
7. Choose a canopy bed

Speaking of which! A true symbol of charm and refinement, the canopy bed comes in many styles, from baroque to bohemian. A linen sheer will add a touch of tenderness and freshness to your bedroom décor and, above all, will not block the light.
If, on the other hand, you want a canopy bed to filter the light, blackout curtains will be more useful… but perhaps less attractive!
In any case, a canopy bed is a very charming way to enhance a bedroom, especially if the room is full of character, with a brick wall for example.
8. Make your storage a decorative element

You have two options for storage in your bedroom:
- To add to the sense of serenity in the bedroom, store things out of sight.
The room will look calmer and more spacious if everything is neatly put away. In that case, pay attention to the quality and look of your dressers, or use mirrors to minimize the space your closet might take up.
- Repurpose your storage system by turning it into a decorative element.
As shown in the photo, an open wardrobe with the colours arranged in order will add a lot of charm to your bedroom. Use a piece of driftwood hung from ropes, or an industrial clothes rack, and the result will be stunning.
Whatever you choose, here are a few rules to follow when it comes to bedroom storage:
- Choose a roomy nightstand with drawers where you can easily hide several books, creams or reading glasses. All these items should be within reach, but ideally out of sight. The only decoration to enhance your nightstands: designer bedside lamps that match the décor.
- You can use a storage chest or bench at the foot of the bed to store extra sheets, blankets and pillows.
- For easy-to-reach books and accessories, use a headboard with built-in shelves or sliding panels.
- Place shallow boxes under the bed, hiding them with a sheet or a duvet that is long enough.
9. Play with tones and materials

A good way to enhance your bedroom décor is to mix materials and play with tones. A jute rug will go wonderfully with a wool bedspread and linen sheets, as long as you stay with similar tones.
Layer cushions and vary tones and patterns to create a contrast that adds depth to your décor.
Bedroom textiles are a great way to enrich the décor while keeping it simple: just choose a few key colours. The colour of your rug, for example, should harmonize with the curtains, bed linen and cushions so that the interplay of tones works without feeling heavy.
Playing with materials will bring a lot of warmth to your bedroom. A knotted cushion, velvet, a fleece throw, cotton sheets… Experiment, try things out and combine the most beautiful materials with your favourite tones!
Make your bedroom a true getaway
Your bedroom décor should help you enjoy your bed and feel good.
To that end, try to discipline yourself not to spend too much time on your phone, computer or television once you are in the bedroom. It is a special place to relax and recharge.
